Recently, we had the privilege of working on a deeply personal and meaningful project. A client came to us with a fragile VHS tape containing rare footage of her husband’s late father. The tape had been stored for decades, suffering from alignment issues and degradation that made playback nearly impossible.
The client had reached out to multiple digitization services, only to be told her project was too difficult or even impossible. When the tape arrived at ECG Productions, we saw the physical damage immediately. The casing was misaligned, and the tape’s magnetic strip showed signs of wear. It would take patience, precision, and the right equipment to recover the footage.
We carefully disassembled the tape, realigning the reels and addressing internal defects to stabilize it. Then came the tricky part: finding a VHS deck capable of proper playback. We tested the tape across three different machines before finding one with the right alignment to capture the footage without further damage.
Once the video was playable, we digitized it using professional-grade equipment, ensuring the highest possible quality. While this project did not require extensive visual or audio restoration, the emotional importance of preserving the tape’s integrity was paramount.

They said I needed a video restoration specialist, but had no idea where I could find one. There aren’t a lot of experts in video restoration and VHS digitization.
