Mobile Podcasting

Podcasting is for anyone who has an idea and wants to talk about it. You can discuss literally anything and people will listen. In fact, 51 percent of Americans have listened to at least one podcast episode in their lives. From entertainment to education, episodic stories to interviews, podcasts are a unique way to inform listeners on the subjects that interest you know the most about.

Podcasting-on-the-go is more common than you may think. Recording episodes regularly is important to keep your audience listening, but you’re not always in your usual comfy set-up. Luckily, you don’t have to be. Mobile podcasting not only allows you to create a quality set-up to record your podcast from anywhere, but it can have added benefits to connect listeners to your content.

Setting up your mobile recording space

You can actually record a podcast from anywhere, as long as you have the right gear to capture the right sound. If your podcast focuses on racing, why not record from inside a car? The extra noise from the engines can actually add to a few clips of your podcast in this case. On the other hand, if you’re not looking to add certain noise for effect, but want to record in a more ideal environment, it’s possible to get a quiet recording just about anywhere.

The first thing you need to create the right recording space is somewhere quiet, preferably one without uncovered windows. Windowless is best to keep sound distortion down, but curtains can  work too. If you can find a carpeted room, all the better, since noise can bounce off the floor as well. Make sure your space isn’t somewhere other people will need to access during your recording. You don’t want interruptions. Once you’re all set, before you hit the record button, remember to check for these few other things:

  • Is the AC off? Air conditioning buzz is louder than you think! You may be sweating just a bit at the end of the recording, but turning off the AC is the best thing you can do for the quality of your recording.
  • Are you near a busy road? Road noise is the most common distraction from clean recordings. If the odds of a semi roaring past your window is high, you might want to relocate. If that’s not a possibility, just throwing a quick verbal warning in at the start of the podcast lets your audience know you’re aware of the noise and that it’s a rare occurrence for a podcast as pro as your own.
  • Can you turn off devices? The only way to make sure your mobile podcast doesn’t get interrupted is to turn off your devices. This isn’t always possible, but if you can, it’s a good practice. If you’re using your device to record the podcast, make sure it won’t ring or ping.

Even the tiniest of noises can get magnified during the mixing process as your mobile podcast is recorded. These disruptive sounds can’t all be removed during post-production. Your safest bet when mobile podcasting is to limit the amount of these sounds you pick up during the initial recording.

Recording podcasts on location

The two big perks to mobile podcasting are that they allow you to stay on top of your recording schedule and they can add credibility to your content. Recording from a location directly related to your podcast subject can increase listener interest. If you’re a beauty podcaster who happens to work in the industry, podcasting from the makeup room of a photo shoot, whether you’re putting on the makeup or wearing it in front of the camera, adds a little something extra. Your listening can connect to your content in a relevant setting. As a podcaster, being in a setting like that probably gives you more to talk about too!

With so many podcasters having a professional lifestyle that keeps them constantly on the go, mobile podcasting is a great way to maintain a recording schedule. Taking a small break between episodes is fine, but what if you’re in the film industry and go on location for three months? Travel doesn’t have to mean taking a podcast hiatus.
