James Patterson | Can’t Put It Down - The Red Book

James Patterson’s The Red Book gives a new meaning to an old saying for can’t-miss reads!

Here at ECG we take comedy very seriously. This commercial was created as the first in a proposed series of commercials, all featuring people who were unable to put down their favorite James Patterson novel (The Red Book) in spite of their real-life responsibilities.

For The Red Book commercial, we were tasked with finding a barber-shop that would allow us to shoot there for just a few hours on a Sunday morning. We were able to kill two birds with one stone by reaching out to an actor/barber we know who works at American Haircuts in Roswell, GA.

With our location and distracted-barber cast, we were once again lucky to find an actor willing to let us shave their head on-camera. “I needed a haircut anyways” he said nonchalantly after we filmed a closeup of his head getting shaved.

Trey Gregory, our director of photography shot this commercial with the RED Digital Cinema Monstro 8k camera and the Angenieux EZ-1 and EZ-2 Cinema Lenses. This helped him render the deep, dark wood in the shop and really highlight the barber shop’s classic look and feel.

Our director, Collin Ingram, knew that the final shot of the spot was the key to the whole thing coming together. So we captured multiple versions of this shot with multiple different deliveries to give us some leeway in post-production.

One of the more satisfying parts of creating this project was sitting in the editing suite with Cameron Shaw, and auditioning all the different ending shots, to determine which one hit the best. The end result, as you can see, hits just right.

With the creation of any comedy video, it’s important to work with a director who not only understands the inherent humor in the script, but who also understands the post-production process. A director who knows how to edit will be thinking of the edit while on-set. This can lead to some on-set decisions, like getting extra takes of the end shot that can make or break your video. It’s no laughing matter to get a comedic commercial just right.

If you are looking for an experienced team of video comedians, then you’ve come to the right place. Our creative team will help you get the laughs you want!

Discover how ECG Productions crafted the James Patterson ‘The Red Book’ commercial, balancing location scouting, camera tech, comedic timing, and post-production finesse to

This article helps marketing and production decision-makers understand the practical steps and creative choices behind producing a comedic commercial that connects with audiences.

Finding the Perfect Location and Cast for Authenticity

Location scouting is often the first production hurdle, and for ‘The Red Book’ commercial, ECG turned a challenge into an advantage. We needed a barber shop that felt genuine and allowed a short Sunday shoot. By leveraging a connection with an actor who also works as a barber at American Haircuts in Roswell, GA, we secured a real location and a cast member willing to be on camera — and even shave his head on set. This kind of resourcefulness saves time and budget while adding authenticity to the story.

Choosing Camera and Lenses to Set the Tone

Our Director of Photography, Trey Gregory, selected the RED Digital Cinema Monstro 8K camera paired with Angenieux EZ-1 and EZ-2 cinema lenses. This combination was critical to capturing the rich textures of the classic wood interiors and delivering the cinematic depth that elevated the commercial’s look. Investing in high-end camera gear isn’t just about resolution; it’s about how the image feels and supports the brand’s tone.

Directing Comedy with Edit in Mind

Comedy on camera is a delicate balance of timing, performance, and editing. Director Collin Ingram approached the shoot with a clear vision of the final edit, capturing multiple versions of the key closing shot with varied deliveries. This foresight gave the post-production team flexibility to choose the take that landed the best punchline. Having a director who understands editing workflows can transform the shoot by anticipating what footage will work best in the cut.

Post-Production: Crafting the Perfect Ending

In the editing suite, collaboration between Director Collin Ingram and Editor Cameron Shaw was pivotal. They reviewed multiple endings, testing pacing and comedic impact to select the one that resonated most. This iterative process exemplifies how post-production is not just assembly but creative storytelling. Color grading and sound design further enhanced the mood, ensuring the commercial’s tone was consistent and engaging.

Why Production Partners Matter for Comedic Commercials

Comedy is notoriously difficult to get right on video. It requires a production team that understands timing, performance nuances, and the technical aspects that support humor. ECG’s integrated approach—from pre-production through final delivery—ensures that every decision serves the story and the audience’s reaction. If your brand needs a commercial that truly connects through humor, partnering with a team experienced in comedic storytelling is essential.

FAQ

What makes a location suitable for a short commercial shoot?

A suitable location balances authenticity, availability, and logistics. For short shoots, it’s crucial to find a place that fits the story visually, allows quick setup and teardown, and has cooperative management or owners. Leveraging personal connections can streamline this process.

How does camera choice impact the final commercial look?

Camera and lens selection affect image quality, color rendition, depth of field, and overall mood. High-end cinema cameras like the RED Monstro 8K provide detailed, cinematic images that help elevate a commercial’s production value and support the brand’s tone.

Why is it important for a director to think about editing during the shoot?

When directors anticipate the editing process, they capture multiple takes and angles that provide options in post-production. This foresight can save time, improve pacing, and ensure the final cut delivers the intended emotional or comedic impact.
