Project Write-Up

Slim | One Destiny

Making great art is all about following your heart.

Director of Photography, Brandon Peterson, and artist, Slim, had a unique vision for her spoken word music video "One Destiny." Brandon wore multiple hats for this project, including director, and editor, too. Their collaboration, inspiration, and dedication, along with the input of assistant director, Jordan Nowlin, paid off. The result was this stylish, experimental video. Of course, even the most driven creative minds can’t bring a vision to life without help. Soulful performances from Slim, Daniel MacNabb as the Man with the Rose, and Mark Burgmon as a mysterious Street Drummer, help bring this concept to life. Shot on our trusty Canon C200, with a beautiful color grade from Jenn Lee, this passion project looks fantastic. Slim was, of course, thrilled. When the goals of the artist and the team are so aligned, one might call their meeting… destiny. Client: SlimProfile: Music Video

Project Story

Discover how to plan, shoot, and post-produce a music video like Slim’s One Destiny with aligned creative vision, sound strategy, and production precision to ensure your project

Helps readers decide how to plan and execute a music video production that captures artistic vision and delivers on brand goals.

Aligning Vision and Production Goals

At the heart of Slim | One Destiny is a clear creative vision shared between artist and production team. When the artist’s passion meets a production crew that understands the story, the result is more than a video—it’s a compelling experience. Early conversations should focus on who the video needs to reach, what emotions it should evoke, and what success looks like beyond just finishing the edit. This alignment shapes every production decision, from casting to camera choice.

Sound as a Narrative Driver, Not Background

Sound is the emotional backbone of Slim | One Destiny. Music, dialogue, and ambient audio aren’t just added elements—they define pacing, tone, and viewer trust. Planning sound early is essential: consider voiceover needs, music licensing, captioning, and how the video will be consumed (with or without sound). This ensures the final mix supports the story and brand message, rather than competing with or diluting it.

Production Choices That Support the Story

Shooting on the Canon C200 gave the production flexibility and image quality that matched the video’s stylish, experimental tone. Choosing the right camera, lenses, and lighting setups is a strategic decision that supports the narrative and mood. On-set collaboration, including roles like assistant director and director of photography, ensures the shoot stays on track and captures the performances that bring the concept to life.

Post-Production: Crafting the Final Experience

Editing and color grading are where the video’s soul is polished. Jenn Lee’s color grade enhanced the mood, while Brandon Peterson’s editorial rhythm shaped the storytelling flow. Post-production is also the time to refine sound design and mix, ensuring every element works harmoniously. Having a clear approval process and understanding platform delivery requirements avoids costly rework and keeps the project on schedule.

Practical Steps to Start Your Music Video Project

Begin with a detailed briefing: define your audience, key messages, deadlines, and any existing assets or brand guidelines. Share reference videos with notes on what works and what doesn’t to help your production partner understand your vision. ECG can then recommend tailored production and post-production services, drawing on portfolio examples similar to your goals. This upfront clarity leads to smarter budgeting, smoother production, and a finished video that truly resonates.
