Project Write-Up

Croy Engineering | ASHE Conference Promo

We Engineered One Hype-Inducing Event Promo Video for The 2023 ASHE Conference

When it comes to civil engineering, events don't get much bigger than the ASHE Conference. For 2023's conference, the honor of hosting this prestigious event went to our hometown of Atlanta, and the honor of promoting it went to us.

Or good friends at Croy Engineering tasked us with getting engineers from all over the country stoked for the 2023 ASHE Conference. They asked us to capture the spirit of Atlanta; to show what this city is all about, and to showcase the many attractions it has to offer. We're intimately familiar with how great Atlanta is, and we took the responsibility of bringing its energy to this promo very seriously.

Of course, given the fact that the ASHE conference brings together the country's best & brightest in highway engineering, our focus was on transportation. As such, footage of Atlanta's roadways not only served as connective tissue in the video, it also provided inspiration for some top-notch transpo-related puns in the graphics copy.

Editor Kelsey Cherney took the reins and, using a combination of stock footage, photo assets from our client, and footage of Georgia's own GDOT Commissioner, Russell McMurry, crafted a compelling promo that demonstrates Atlanta's myriad allures. Animator David Hixon added some dynamic 3D motion to the text to elevate the presentation.

In short, this is a great example of taking something that could have been flat and drab and turning it into something fun! Our client was thrilled and ready to share their big conference plans with the world!

Help marketing and production decision-makers understand how to plan and execute a compelling event promo video that connects audience, message, and distribution effectively.

Why Event Promo Videos Must Earn Attention Fast

In event marketing, especially for niche audiences like civil engineers, your promo video needs to grab attention within seconds. The Croy Engineering | ASHE Conference promo succeeds because it immediately connects viewers with a clear reason to care: the prestige of the ASHE Conference and the vibrant energy of Atlanta. This means your production strategy should prioritize a strong hook in both visuals and messaging, ensuring the audience quickly understands the event’s significance and what’s in it for them.

Planning Multiple Versions Before Production Starts

One of the biggest production mistakes is treating the promo video as a single deliverable. For Croy Engineering, ECG planned ahead for multiple versions: the hero video, shorter cutdowns, vertical crops for social, captioned edits for silent autoplay, and thumbnails for paid media. This approach requires early coordination between pre-production, shoot, and post to capture footage and assets that work across formats, saving time and budget in the long run.

Blending Local Flavor with Industry Focus in Visual Storytelling

The promo’s success lies in how it balances showcasing Atlanta’s unique character with the technical focus of highway engineering. ECG combined footage of Atlanta’s landmarks and roadways with transportation-themed graphics and puns, reinforcing the client’s brand and audience interests. This kind of layered storytelling requires thoughtful shot selection, animation integration, and editing rhythm that respects both the city’s vibe and the engineering community’s expectations.

Collaborating Closely on Editing and Animation to Elevate Impact

Editor Kelsey Cherney and animator David Hixon worked hand-in-hand to transform raw footage and client assets into a polished, engaging promo. The use of dynamic 3D text animation added energy without overshadowing the message. This collaboration highlights the importance of integrating post-production early in the process, so pacing, tone, and visual effects support the story rather than feeling like afterthoughts.

Setting Clear Goals and Approval Processes to Avoid Delays

Before production, ECG and Croy Engineering aligned on who the target audience was, what the video needed to prove, and what success looked like. They also clarified the review and approval workflow to keep the project on track. Defining these parameters upfront helps avoid costly revisions and ensures the final video is not just finished, but effective and ready for distribution across channels.
