Project Write-Up

Maker's Mark | Make Your Mark: Harlem

A brand experience that’s dripping with swagger

Maker’s Mark is a brand that’s renowned for being as tasteful as it is tasty. So it’s no surprise that the whiskey giant’s latest marketing campaign is equal parts cool and collaborative. The campaign, entitled “Make Your Mark,” empowers local artists to “Make Their Mark” on their community through their work. It’s great idea that goes down as well as double Maker’s on the rocks: nice and smooth.

For this installation, the Maker’s team partnered with renowned Harlem-based artist Namxkeel to produce a true-to-brand live art experience. The results were a sight for sore eyes. Drinks were flowing, the energy was up, and Namxkeel’s creative twist on Maker’s Mark’s signature red wax was a hit! Experiential brand executions like this are what we live for, and both the shoot & post-production were a blast.

Why Marketing Videos Must Earn Attention Immediately

Maker’s Mark’s Make Your Mark: Harlem campaign shows us that a marketing video’s success hinges on capturing audience interest within seconds. The video isn’t just a final product; it’s a strategic tool that connects the brand story, visual proof, pacing, and call-to-action. When planning your video, think beyond the finished file. Consider how the video will engage viewers, where it will be distributed, and what action you want them to take next. This approach ensures your production choices—from shoot style to post-production edits—serve the campaign’s broader marketing goals.

Plan Multiple Versions Before the Shoot Begins

One finished video rarely fits all marketing needs. Maker’s Mark’s campaign illustrates the importance of planning for multiple exports early: hero videos for brand storytelling, shorter cutdowns for social media, vertical crops for mobile platforms, captioned versions for accessibility, and tailored edits for sales or internal use. Discussing these deliverables during pre-production helps the entire team—from producers to editors—align on footage capture, pacing, and graphics. This foresight prevents costly reshoots or re-edits later and ensures every version feels purposeful and polished.

Ask the Right Questions Early to Shape Success

Before you greenlight production, clarify who needs to care about your video and what they already know. What key message must the video prove? Where will it be watched—social, website, events? Who will approve it, and what defines success beyond just finishing the edit? Maker’s Mark’s campaign underscores how answering these questions upfront guides creative choices and production logistics. This practical groundwork reduces guesswork, streamlines approvals, and ensures the final video resonates with its intended audience.

Use References to Sharpen Creative Direction

Sharing reference videos with notes on pacing, tone, visual style, sound design, and calls-to-action helps production teams understand your vision quickly. Pointing out what works—and what doesn’t—can be as valuable as showing examples that inspire you. This clarity accelerates the creative conversation and leads to a finished product that feels right, not just done. ECG encourages clients to bring references early to shape storyboards, shooting style, and post-production choices, ensuring the video aligns with brand personality and campaign goals.
