Project Write-Up

Belgard | How to Build a Fire Pit

We didn't start the fire...pit

Who says that video production specialists can’t be handy? In this “How To” video for Belgard, an Oldcastle Inc. brand, we rolled up our sleeves, put on our gloves, and built us a fire pit. Well, we didn’t build it, per se. But our talent sure did! There were a lot of moving pieces on this shoot - mostly of the stone variety - but our talented crew got it done with ease. With some cool time-lapses and great line art animation, we built this awesome video brick by brick. Client: Oldcastle | Profile: Training Video , Commercial

Project Story

Discover how Belgard’s fire pit video combines live action, animation, and motion design to clearly explain construction steps. Learn production tips for your next how-to video.

Help readers decide how to use motion graphics and live action effectively in instructional video production.

Why Clear Motion Design Matters in How-To Videos

When producing a how-to video like Belgard’s fire pit build, clarity is king. Motion graphics, animation, and visual effects aren’t just decorative—they’re tools that make complex steps easier to follow. For example, time-lapses speed up repetitive actions without losing detail, while line art animations highlight key assembly points that live action alone might miss. Prioritizing motion that serves explanation over style ensures your audience understands the process quickly and confidently.

Separating Style from Communication Goals

Before diving into production, it’s crucial to define what the video must communicate and who will watch it. Belgard’s video balances brand guidelines with the need for technical accuracy and viewer engagement. This means the animation style supports the message without overshadowing it. Start with the core explanation, then layer in brand elements and visual polish. This approach keeps the project focused and efficient, reducing costly revisions during approvals.

Choosing the Right Production Approach

Not every how-to video needs the same mix of live action and animation. ECG helps decide if your project benefits from 2D or 3D animation, motion design overlays, or a straightforward edit with strong visual support. For Belgard, combining live footage of the build with animated callouts and time-lapses created a dynamic yet clear narrative. Understanding your audience’s familiarity with the subject and where they’ll watch the video informs these choices, optimizing engagement and retention.

Planning for Approvals and Delivery

A smooth approval process starts with clear goals and deliverables. Belgard’s team knew who needed to sign off, what brand rules applied, and the runtime limits upfront. Sharing references with notes on pacing, tone, and animation level helped keep everyone aligned. For your project, establish these parameters early, so post-production can focus on polish and quality rather than reworking fundamentals. Also, consider final delivery formats and distribution platforms to ensure technical specs are met.
