Project Write-Up

The Armory | If I Ever Official Music Video

This video, directed by Jason Sirotin, was ECG's second official music video for local band The Armory. The video was shot with two Blackmagic Production Cameras. It was edited in Adobe Premiere using a multi-cam sequence for the band performance. The color grade was done in DaVinci Resolve and effects were processed in both Adobe After Effects and Autodesk Maya. For the shoot, the ECG studio and green screen were transformed into a black cube using 6-10x20 ft drops. All of the lighting was done using projectors and small LED kickers that were rigged to the lighting grid. Body paint for the alien girls was done by Stephanie Anderson and company of Neon Armour. The makeup was so complex that it took 4 hours per girl to complete. Project Story

Explore how sound, pacing, tone, and post-production choices shaped The Armory's 'If I Ever' music video, with practical insights for smarter video production decisions.

Help readers understand how strategic production and post-production choices shape a music video's impact and how to plan their own projects accordingly.

Why Production Choices Define Your Music Video’s Impact

Every music video tells a story beyond the song itself. For The Armory's 'If I Ever,' the production choices—from camera selection to lighting design—were deliberate tools to shape the viewer’s emotional experience. Using two Blackmagic Production Cameras allowed for a versatile multi-cam setup, capturing dynamic angles of the band’s performance. This decision ensured flexibility in editing and pacing, critical for maintaining energy and engagement throughout the video.

Transforming Space: Lighting and Set Design That Elevate Mood

The ECG studio was transformed into a black cube using large black drops, creating an immersive, controlled environment. Lighting was crafted with projectors and small LED kickers rigged to the grid, emphasizing mood and texture without overwhelming the visuals. This minimalist yet precise lighting approach gave the video a distinctive tone that supports the song’s atmosphere while keeping the focus on the performers.

Complex Makeup and Practical Effects: Adding Depth and Character

Body paint for the alien characters, applied by Stephanie Anderson and Neon Armour, took four hours per person, highlighting the production’s commitment to detail. This practical effect added a tangible, tactile layer to the video’s aesthetic, enhancing the narrative without relying solely on digital effects. It’s a reminder that investing time in makeup and practical effects can create authenticity that resonates on screen.

Post-Production: The Edit, Color, and Visual Effects That Complete the Story

Post-production began with a multi-cam sequence edited in Adobe Premiere, ensuring the pacing matched the song’s rhythm and emotional beats. Color grading in DaVinci Resolve refined the mood, while visual effects processed in Adobe After Effects and Autodesk Maya added subtle enhancements without distracting from the core performance. These layered post steps demonstrate how editing, color, and effects must work in harmony to finalize the video’s message and polish.

Planning Your Music Video: What to Bring Into the First Conversation

Before the timeline fills up, clarify your goals: Who is your audience? What must the video prove or communicate? Where will it be distributed? Who will approve it? What are your brand guidelines and deadlines? Bringing existing footage, references, and must-have deliverables into the initial conversation helps production teams like ECG tailor the right strategy, from shoot to delivery. This upfront clarity prevents guesswork and keeps the project on track.
